Illawarra Wanderer

Thirroul to Port Kembla and beyond
– Or –
Illawarra Wanderer

Destination

This is basically a ‘no hills’ ride from Thirroul to the northerns shores of Lake Illawarra via Woolongong and Port Kembla. I’ve called the ride ‘Illawarra Wanderer’ as it consists of a tain ride from Central down to Thirroul where we join the bike path to via the coast to Woolongong city, then to Port Kembla and a ride around the northern edge of Lake Illawarra. All this on bike paths. We then cycle four or so km to Unanderra rail station and thence back to Central. We need to do this on a Sunday so that the Port Kembla area is free of heavy goods vehicles.
The riding distance is about 44 km.

Places for breaks

Coffee or breakfast at Thirroul , and lunch at the Berkeley hotel prior to catching the train back from Unanderra station.

Timing

The train times for a Sunday are:

Central to Thirroul
7:29am — 8:48am

Unanderra to Central
1:40pm — 3:18pm
2:33pm — 4:18pm

Notes

No or moderate hills. The majority of the 44 km being
ridden on cycleways or shared pathways.
